David Healy congratulates Nikica Jelavic on opening the scoring for Rangers

RANGERS picked up all three points in a hard-fought 2-1 win over St Johnstone thanks to Croatian hitman Nikica Jelavic as his deadly double sank the Saints.

It was two close range finishes from the striker as he took his tally for the season to 17 goals and no more than Ally McCoist’s side deserved as they recorded their second win in Perth this season.

Lee Wallace celebrates with goalscorer David Healy

RANGERS secured their place in the fifth round of the William Hill Scottish Cup thanks to a 4-0 victory over Arbroath which saw substitute Salim Kerkar net his first goal for the Light Blues.

After a tough start to the game in which the Red Lichties looked dangerous it was David Healy that broke the deadlock with his second goal of the season in 17 minutes.

Rangers 3 Motherwell 0 (SPL) 2nd January 2012

David Healy opened the scoring for Rangers and was largley impressive

RANGERS started 2012 in the perfect way with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over third placed Motherwell at Ibrox.

Before the match fans were stunned to learn that Nikica Jelavic was ruled out of the big game due to a groin injury but the Croatian was not needed as the Light Blues showed what they are capable of throughout an impressive 90 minutes display.

Joe Ledley rises high and scores the only goal of the game

RANGERS go into 2012 with a deficit to make up over Celtic in the SPL – but only after Lee Wallace was denied a perfectly good goal which might have set up a crucial Old Firm win.

This narrow 1-0 victory for the Parkhead team means they lead the championship by two points after the Light Blues led for most of the season so far.

Lee Wallace opened his Rangers tally by opening the scoring against St Mirren

RANGERS’ lead at the top of the SPL is down to just one point ahead of the Old Firm game with Celtic on Wednesday after they lost 2-1 at St Mirren.

Lee McCulloch and Dorin Goian were sent off as Lee Wallace’s opener was cancelled out by Aaron Mooy before Paul McGowan’s winner on the stroke of half-time.

Carlos Bocanegra volleys home the opener for Rangers

A crucial 82nd minute goal from super sub Kyle Lafferty gave Rangers a 2-1 win over Inverness Caley Thistle in what proved to be a dramatic SPL clash at Ibrox Stadium.

After a hard fought first half in which few chances were created Carlos Bocanegra opened the scoring on 54 minutes with a terrific near post shot.

Nikica Jelavic was Rangers hero today with two goals

A second-half brace from Nikica Jelavic gave Rangers a crucial victory over Pat Fenlon’s Hibs at Easter Road.

The Croatian took his tally for the season to 14 by hitting the net from the penalty spot on 61 minutes before adding a second seven minutes later, bulleting a downward header past Graham Stack to ensure the champions left the capital with all three points.

RANGERS consolidated their lead at the top of the SPL with a dogged 3-1 over Dundee Utd to move 12 points clear in the title race.

That is their advantage over Motherwell who hold a game in hand over the Light Blues, a match they will settle on Sunday against third placed Celtic.

Aberdeen 1 Rangers 2 (SPL) 29th October 2011

Nikica Jelavic slots away from the penalty spot

RANGERS extended their superb away record in the SPL with a 2-1 victory over Aberdeen at Pittodrie but the result came at a cost.

Goals from substitute Kyle Lafferty and Nikica Jelavic on 57 and 67 minutes respectively gave the Light Blues a dramatic win but the result is likely to be overshadowed by a knee injury picked up by Steven Naismith in the first half.
